Master Reef Guides

Master Reef Guides on Fitzroy Island

Master Reef Guides

Master Reef Guides will strive to be world leading coral reef guides and interpreters sharing the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area through engaging stories and memorable experiences.

These reef ambassadors can provide up-to-date information on the Reef, share stories of the magical World Heritage Area, and explain what you can do to make a difference.

The Master Reef Guide program is delivered by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Association of Marine Park Tourism Operators and Tourism and Events Queensland and is the first of its kind for the Reef.

To reach a Master Reef Guide status, a comprehensive selection and training process is required. Find out about the making of a Master Reef Guide.

Fifth cohort Master Reef Guides

In June 2021, our fifth Master Reef Guides training school took place on the spectacular Heron Island.

Our team spent a week sharing scientific knowledge and storytelling techniques with 19 incredible Reef guides, who share the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef with visitors every day. Master Reef Guides are striving to be the world’s leading interpreters and story tellers.

There are now 82 Master Reef Guides along the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, from as far north as the Ribbon Reefs to as far south as Lady Elliot Island.
