Junior outlook

The Junior Outlook Reef Beat presents a series of posters focused on results from the Authority’s Outlook Report 2019, introduces some amazing animals seen along the Reef and the actions students can take to protect the Reef.

Outlook Report 2019

Published every five years, the 2019 Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority's Outlook Report examines the Great Barrier Reef's health, pressures, and likely future. The 2019 report is the third comprehensive report in the series, and identifies the Great Barrier Reef Region still faces significant pressures ranging in scale from local to global.

Coastal ecosystems

We have a range of educational resources for teachers and students on the 14 coastal ecosystems that are important for a healthy Great Barrier Reef.

These natural areas provide links between land, freshwater and marine environments, as well as feeding and breeding grounds for many marine species.

Changes or losses to these coastal ecosystems can lead to a variety of adverse environmental impacts and serious implications for industries that depend on the Great Barrier Reef.

Reef Beat activity book and video

This Reef Beat education series, threats to the Reef, encourages teachers and students to explore the Great Barrier Reef, threats to the Reef and ways to protect its health and improve its resilience. The series includes an activity book and five short videos.

Coastal ecosystems

Ecosystems teaching unit

Our ecosystems teaching unit is aimed at year nine level. Over approximately six weeks, students will investigate starch production in leaves and understand how plants use the sunlight energy to produce food. Students will explore energy flow in food webs within ecosystems and will identify the biotic and abiotic components of ecosystems, and understand how these interact and relate to energy flow.

Habitat investigations teaching unit

Out habitat investigations science unit is aimed at year one level. Over approximately 10 weeks, students will explore one or more habitats within their local environment. They will identify external features of different plants and animals and how their needs are met in the habitats they live in. Students will identify and describe changes to local habitats as a result of human activity and suggest how science helps people care for their local habitats.

Bursting with Biodiversity educational series

Aimed at all year levels, the ReefBeat Bursting with Biodiversity poster series and attached resource book contains information activities for students of all ages.
