The Marine Park Authority Board has set an interim policy position that no Fish Aggregation Devices (FADs) are to be deployed in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park whilst the Authority develops a contemporary policy in relation to this matter. The Marine Park Authority Board also set an interim policy position that no artificial reefs are to be deployed in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park over the same period (note: this does not include structures for the purposes of restoration of reef habitat; or breakwaters, moorings, cables, pipelines, artwork or similar) and the policy to be developed should cover both FADs and artificial reef structures.

The interim policies are specific to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975 and do not alter the application of the Environment Protection (Sea Dumping) Act 1981, which has a broader definition of ‘artificial reef’.
