The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority acknowledges that Great Barrier Reef communities and industries are facing significant challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Our aim is to continue our work to protect the Reef and to support the industries and communities that rely upon it, throughout this difficult time. This includes taking steps now to improve future tourism management of the Great Barrier Reef.
The tools we currently use to manage tourism in the Marine Parks have served their purpose well; however, conditions have changed significantly in recent times and will continue to change across Reef ecosystems, as well as through socio-economic drivers and industry trends.
Our management tools need to respond to these changes. Some management tools need to be revised to be more simple, proactive, clear and agile to respond quickly to changing conditions. This is particularly important under large, rapid changes, such as climate change, financial crises and COVID-19.
The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and the Department of Environment and Science’s Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service have jointly developed a Draft Tourism Management Action Strategy (Draft Action Strategy) to provide overarching guidance on how to be more responsive to these changing conditions.
The development of the Draft Action Strategy has already been informed by input from key representatives from the tourism industry, Traditional Use of Marine Resource Agreement Traditional Owner groups, and others.
We now invite broader stakeholder and partner insights and expertise to ensure the Tourism Management Action Strategy considers everyone’s needs and can achieve its vision.
All submissions received will inform the finalisation and implementation of the Tourism Management Action Strategy by the Managing Agencies. As this is a joint strategy, submissions may be shared between the Managing Agencies.
The consultation period for the Draft Action Strategy is open until Friday 16 April 2021.
Submissions can be emailed to email@example.com; or delivered to:
