This Reef was named in recognition of Mr David Perkins, who contributed significantly to marine conservation through management, policy and legislative initiatives and to establishing Marine Parks along the Queensland coast. His passion for the conservation of marine species influenced many throughout Australia. The name was agreed to under a Memorandum of Understanding between Australian Hydrographic Office, Department of Environment and Resource Management and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. The reef was named on 1 November 2007.
