Personal information that the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (the GBRMPA) collects from you on your Environmental Management Charge (EMC) charging return forms and EMC logbooks is protected by the Privacy Act 1988 (the Privacy Act).

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975 (the Act) requires the GBRMPA to assess and collect charges imposed by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (Environmental Management Charge - General) Act 1993 and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (Environmental Management Charge - Excise) Act 1993.

The information provided by you on these forms will be used to assess your liability to pay an Environmental Management Charge. For this reason, it is a requirement under the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Regulations 1983 (the Regulations) for holders of chargeable permissions to give to the GBRMPA copies of EMC logbook entries and charging return forms at quarterly intervals.

If you make an application to the GBRMPA for a relevant permission, the information you provide on these forms may also be used to assist the GBRMPA to assess your application, by enabling it to determine if you have any outstanding EMC liability. The authority to collect this information is in the Act and the Regulations.

Further, in assessing your application for a permission, the information you provide on these forms may be used to assess whether you have made reasonable use of any permission previously granted to you.

Who do we give the information to

The GBRMPA will not disclose personal information you provide on these forms to any third party without your consent, unless it is required to do so by law.

However, the GBRMPA may use some of the information you provide to create aggregated statistical data, which it may pass onto other departments and organisations, such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)/ Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS), the Association of Marine Park Tourism Operators (AMPTO), Port Authorities and the Tourism & Recreation Reef Advisory Committee (TRRAC).
