Marine Wildlife Stranding Listserver

In 1998, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA), in collaboration with the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS), established a Queensland-wide Hotline to enable the public to rapidly report sick, injured or dead marine mammals (dugongs, whales, dolphins) and turtles. About 40 marine-related calls are received each month.

QPWS and the GBRMPA give high priority to recovering live stranded and dead marine mammals and turtles. Subsequent necropsies (which are post mortem examinations of the animals, or animal autopsies) help to determine the cause of the stranding, injury or mortality, which assists in managing threats to the species. QPWS summarises the information obtained from these animals in annual reports. 'Stranding-Announce' Listserver

GBRMPA has also instituted an external listserver 'Stranding-Announce'. Soon after a marine mammal (dugong, whale or dolphin) or turtle incident (live stranding or carcass), subscribers to the listserver are provided with details such as a description of the animal, the location of the incident and, if available, biological information (e.g. species, size, sex, reproductive status) and an appraisal of cause of death.

This Listserver is not a discussion forum. Rather it allows the GBRMPA to provide details of marine mammal and turtle live stranding and carcass incidents in Queensland, as soon as practicable after the incident.
