Great Barrier Reef Climate Change Action Plan Mid-term Review
In 2010, a mid-term review evaluated progress towards achieving the Great Barrier Reef Climate Change Action Plan 2007-2012 objectives and management of the GBRMPA's delivery program. The GBRMPA engaged independent evaluators to do the review and both a summary report and the full report are available.
The review found:
- The Action Plan has led to a greater understanding of the urgency and priority of climate change for the Reef.
- There has been good progress on the delivery of activities, both planned and unplanned, and these are contributing to the outcomes sought by the Action Plan. The Action Plan has served as a framework for adaptive program planning and delivery, with a portfolio of projects developed to respond to emerging knowledge and changing conditions.
- The GBRMPA has worked with stakeholders to generate both the agenda for a climate change response, and the information and capabilities required to develop responses to climate change. Significant progress has been made in supporting industry and community adaptation, particularly industry adaptation.
- The GBRMPA is gradually integrating climate change through its core business, and building understanding of the implications of climate change across its operations. Through the Action Plan, the concepts of risk and resilience have been cemented and have strongly influenced the development of the GBRMPA Corporate Plan.
- There is opportunity to renew efforts in targeting and promoting relevant climate change messages, and to strengthen monitoring and evaluation frameworks.
Going forward, we are using the review to help inform our climate change related activities and strategies. For example, action on revitalising how we communicate and share knowledge and messages around climate change and the Reef is already underway.
