Great Barrier Reef Marine Park tourism wins top international accolade
It's official - the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park is among the world's best destinations for sustainable tourism.
The close partnership between reef managers and tourism operators on the Great Barrier Reef was recognised internationally by the World Travel and Tourism Council in Portugal on 13 May 2007 when the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park received the Destination Stewardship Award for sustainable tourism.
The Marine Park tourism industry depends on a healthy Great Barrier Reef and this interdependence has led to the development of a strong and active partnership between the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) and the Marine Park tourism industry. By working together, managers and tourism operators are developing a sustainable industry in the Marine Park and helping to protect the future of the Reef.
