Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority :: Marine Wildlife Stranding Listserver

Marine Wildlife Stranding Listserver

Report sick, injured or dead marine mammals and turtles.

EPA Hotline 1300 130 372

In 1998, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA), in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), established a Queensland-wide Hotline to enable the public to rapidly report sick, injured or dead marine mammals (dugongs, whales, dolphins) and turtles. About 40 marine-related calls are received each month.

EPA and the GBRMPA give high priority to recovering live stranded and dead marine mammals and turtles. Subsequent necropsies (which are post mortem examinations of the animals, or animal autopsies) help to determine the cause of the stranding, injury or mortality, which assists in managing threats to the species. EPA summarises the information obtained from these animals in annual reports. For further information about specific incidents, contact Col Limpus at the EPA in Brisbane.

Subscribe to 'Stranding-Announce' Listserver

By subscribing to the GBRMPA external listserver you will receive notification of marine mammal (dugong, whale or dolphin) or turtle incidents (live stranding or carcass), including details such as a description of the animal, the location of the incident and, if available, biological information (for example species, size, sex, reproductive status) and an appraisal of cause of death.

This Listserver is not a discussion forum. Rather it allows the GBRMPA to provide details of marine mammal and turtle live stranding and carcass incidents in Queensland, as soon as practicable after the incident.
