Appendix 2 - Project No. 25

Title

Satellite tracking of dugongs

Objective

To determine the distribution and movement patterns of dugongs in the Shoalwater Bay–Port Clinton region, with particular attention to the location of dugong feeding areas and migratory routes near Triangular Island (Shoalwater Bay Defence Training Area).

Relevance

The results of this project will be used by the dugong research program that is being funded by Defence to assess underwater explosion which are conducted at two intertidal sites at Triangular Island during occasional Clearance Diver training courses.

Feasibility

This project has mostly already been completed, with the first report by Preen (1999) published recently (3/99). The results of this project will also be used to help produce the Shoalwater Bay ‘dugong use’ map.

Methodology

Satellite tracking collars fitted with GPS positioning units, sealed battery packs and a short trailing antenna were attached to dugongs in the Shoalwater Bay area. Position signals could be detected when dugongs were at the surface between feeding dives, and when overhead satellite coverage was adequate. Position signals from each collar (each with a unique ID code) were recorded remotely on to PC at James Cook University by regular downloads from the satellite service provider.

Approximate cost

$15 000 (approximately) was provided by the Department of Defence in 1997 to enable purchase of two replacement satellite transmitters.

Time required

Basic tracking and analysis work completed. Contribution to a ‘dugong use’ map for the Triangular Island area will be completed by August 1999
