A local Ingham school is the latest school to commit to taking action to protect the Great Barrier Reef.

Trebonne State School has signed up for the environmental education program, Reef Guardian Schools, run by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA).

Through the Reef Guardian Schools program, students have an opportunity to get involved in environmental projects that improve their local environment and the outlook for the Great Barrier Reef.

Hinchinbrook Local Marine Advisory Committee Chairman Geoff Gianotti said Trebonne State School had a proud reputation as an eco-friendly school.

"The school is in a rural area and their involvement benefits everyone – the community, the farmers and the Reef," Mr Gianotti said.

Carolyn Luder from the GBRMPA said the school was enthusiastic to implement new environmental projects.

"Students from Trebonne State School will be involved in a range of projects including habitat regeneration and water quality monitoring," Ms Luder said.

"As the future custodians of the Great Barrier Reef, these students have an important role to play in the future of the Great Barrier Reef.

"The Reef Guardian Schools program is not just for students and teachers to get involved in.

"Schools will also engage their community in environmental issues and promote sustainable practices at home, work and school."

The Reef Guardian Schools program is an initiative of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.
