Yarrilee State School taking on new green challenge
19 February 2009
Yarrilee State School are the proud recipients of an environmental award along with a $500 grant from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) to further their green cause.
The ‘Ripples of Change Award’ recognises excellence in environmental management and will allow the school to undertake a new environmental project.
Ms Megan Sperring from the GBRMPA’s Reef Guardian Schools Program said the grant money will fund materials for a new sustainable vegetable patch.
“Yarrilee State School have been Reef Guardians since 2004 and since then have implemented many excellent environmental initiatives.
“Rainwater tanks, worm farming and recycling are just some of the activities the school has undertaken in an effort to protect the Great Barrier Reef and the natural environment.
“Cultivating a garden in the school using best management practices means they are literally taking ownership of their environment.”
Anne Greiner, Yarrilee’s Deputy Principal and Reef Guardian School Coordinator, said the school was honoured to be receiving the award.
“We take great pride in being part of the sustainability revolution in schools.
“With that comes a responsibility to protect our environment, and we’re excited to be able to do our part. With this grant money we will be setting up a hydroponic garden.”
Diane Walker, Regional Liaison Manager for the GBRMPA will present the award to Yarilee State School and personally thank the school for their efforts in helping save the Reef for future generations.
The award will be presented at Yarrilee State School at 15 Scrubhill Road, Hervey Bay, on Thursday 19 February at 9am.
