Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority :: New Eco-club for Star of the Sea Catholic School

New Eco-club for Star of the Sea Catholic School

6 February 2009

Star of the Sea Catholic School are the proud recipients of an environmental award that comes with a $500 grant from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.

The ‘Ripples of Change Award’ recognises outstanding environmental management and will allow the school to further their endeavours by the creation of a new Eco-club.

Ms Megan Sperring from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s (GBRMPA) Reef Guardian Schools Program said the Eco-club will allow students to ‘walk the walk’ after ‘talking the talk’ in the classroom.

“Sustainability is a subject all students can learn about in the classroom.

“But true appreciation and understanding of the effects we have on the environment and the Great Barrier Reef can only come through hands on experience.

“This project will allow the kids to get involved in a whole range of different environmental activities.”

Veronica Gaughan, Reef Guardian School Coordinator for Star of the Sea, said the Eco-club will tackle several important environmental issues.

“Waste reduction, energy conservation, recycling, plastic bag minimisation and composting are just some of the things the Eco-club will deal with.

“The children involved will essentially take ownership and responsibility for the impacts the school has on the Great Barrier Reef.”

Warwick Sheldon, Regional Liaison Officer for the GBRMPA, will present the award to Star of the Sea Catholic School and personally thank the school for their efforts on behalf of the GBRMPA for their efforts in helping to conserve the Great Barrier Reef for future generations.

The award presentation will take place on Tuesday 10 February at 8:35am at Star of the Sea Catholic School, 181 Goondoon Street, Gladstone.
