Hambledon State School is saving the Reef month by month
5 February 2009
Hambledon State School have won an environment award and a $500 grant from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority to continue their plight to protect the Great Barrier Reef.
The ‘Ripples of Change Award’ recognises environmental excellence through the Authority’s Reef Guardian Schools Program.
Ms Megan Sperring from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s (GBRMPA) Reef Guardian Schools Program said Hambledon State School would use the grant to assist with producing their ‘2009 Reef Reminder calendar’.
“This calendar is made up of beautiful artwork from the students depicting our Great Barrier Reef.
“Each month has a different reminder of how we can all do our part to conserve the Great Barrier Reef. It’s the little things that make such a huge difference - like switching the light off when you’re not in a room to conserve energy and minimise the impacts of climate change.”
Ms Debbie Townsend, Hambledon’s Reef Guardian School Program Coordinator, said the calendar was a great way to get the conservation message across to the broader community.
“We like to think the little messages in the calendar will reach the whole family.
“Our students demonstrate their care and understanding through their actions in the playground, the classroom and the community.”
Phil Laycock, Regional Liaison Officer for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority will present the award to Hambledon State School and personally thank the school for their efforts on behalf of the GBRMPA for their efforts in helping to conserve the Great Barrier Reef for future generations.
The award presentation will take place at Hambledon State School on Thursday 5 February at 9am.
