Bowen State High School greening the way forward

2 March 2009

Bowen State High School has won an environmental award along with a $500 grant from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority to further their green cause.

The ‘Ripples of Change Award’ recognises the supreme efforts the school has put into improving the environment through the Reef Guardian Schools Program.

Ms Megan Sperring from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s (GBRMPA) Reef Guardian Schools Program said the grant will go towards improving the school’s sustainability as well as educating the community on how to protect the Great Barrier Reef.

“New community displays will mean the students can reach the greater community to spread the word on the importance of the Great Barrier Reef.

“Kids teaching adults is a powerful way to communicate the messages of conservation.

“Bowen State High is a fantastic example of community engagement and we’re thrilled to provide an award that recognises their efforts and contributes to their future endeavours.”

Ms Julia Schleehauf, Reef Guardian School Program Coordinator for Bowen State High School, said she is very proud of the school’s efforts.

“Bowen State High prides itself on being environmentally aware.

“We’ve been a Reef Guardian School since 2006 and are striving to lead the community by example to implement all the little things that help protect the Great Barrier Reef.”

Leonie Maddigan, Reef Guardian Schools Project Officer for the GBRMPA, will present the award to Bowen State High and thank the school for its efforts to conserve the Great Barrier Reef for future generations.

The award presentation will take place at Bowen State High School at 8:40am on Monday 2 March, 2009.
