18 February 2009

Proston State School have won an environmental award and a $500 grant from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority to improve their green cause.

The ‘Ripples of Change Award’ will fund gardening equipment for the school’s “Enviroclub”.

Ms Megan Sperring from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s (GBRMPA) Reef Guardian Schools Program said the grant will allow the school to further develop their environmental initiatives.

“Proston State School have implemented several excellent environmental initiatives through the Reef Guardian Schools Program.

“A new garden will nicely compliment the water reduction, energy saving, recycling, composting and worm farming activities already being carried out at the school.”

Stacey Train, Proston State School’s Principal, said she was thrilled to be receiving the grant which will be used to advance the school’s Enviroclub program.

“We’ve been a Reef Guardian School since 2005 and have a very active Enviroclub made up of enthusiastic students.

“The kids in the club are really looking forward to creating a better garden where they can put into practice the good environmental management they are learning about in class.”

Diane Walker, Regional Liaison Manager for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority will present the award to Proston State School and personally thank the school on behalf of the GBRMPA for their efforts in helping to conserve the Great Barrier Reef for future generations.

The award will be presented at 2 pm on Wednesday 18 February at Proston P-10 School, 94 Rodney St Proston.
