Share snags, salty sea stories and fish tales to celebrate International Year of the Reef
21 February 2008
The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority is celebrating ‘International Year of the Reef’ by holding a fun community workshop called Reef Recollections on Thursday 28 February at St Anne’s Catholic Primary School.
The Authority is inviting members of the public to come along to the Reef Recollections event to share their memories about living alongside the Great Barrier Reef.
Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority Director Dr David Wachenfeld said the event was a great way for the Authority to learn the history of the Great Barrier Reef, first hand, by listening to community members tell their stories from the past.
“We encourage individuals to come along to this event to tell their stories and listen to others,” he said.
“Bring your parents and your grandparents and anyone with a long memory who can tell a good tale.
“I think anyone who does attend will be surprised to hear about how the older generations used to enjoy the region.
“Without a doubt we will uncover some entertaining stories about shell collectors and the wonders they uncovered on shorelines and tales of abundant fishing spots easily accessed by old rowing boats 50 metres from the shore.
“It will be an interesting and fun experience for all those who attend especially people who are interested in hearing a good yarn.”
The Great Barrier Reef is holding 10 other similar events in different locations across Queensland to celebrate international year of the reef.
