Community invited to comment on moorings proposal
3 July 2007
The community are invited to have a say on proposed moorings at Fisherman’s Beach Bay on Great Keppel Island.
Ten moorings, operated in conjunction with the resort on Great Keppel Island, have been proposed for the area.
Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) Project Manager Phil Koloi said the community were being encouraged to submit feedback during the consultation process.
“We welcome input on the proposed changes from interested members of the public,” he said.
“It is important that existing uses of the area are fully understood when assessing the proposal.
“Our aim is to ensure everyone has the opportunity to be part of the process so we can determine the best way to manage boating activities in the area.
“The aim of the moorings is to minimise damage to the sea floor within Fisherman’s Beach Bay and provide a more satisfactory control of where boats anchor in the area.”
The community has until 10 August to have their say on the proposal.
Once the public comment period has closed, the submissions will be used by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority to determine the suitability of the moorings.
Further information on the proposal can be obtained from Ozton Pty Ltd C/- International Marina Consultants Pty Ltd via email info@imc-marinas.com or can be downloaded from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority website.
