Anglers do the right thing over holiday period
Friday 6 January 2006
The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park was popular with people fishing over the holiday season and nearly all ensured they were doing the right thing.
Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) Acting Operations Director Malcolm Turner said the GBRMPA was really pleased with the response of people fishing in making sure they knew where they could go and what they could do.
“We had enforcement officers throughout the Marine Park and aside from a small number of incidents people fishing adhered to the zoning rules,” he said.
“Only six offences were detected over the holiday period. This is a very small number for what is traditionally a very busy time of year in the Marine Park.
“It is fantastic to see people getting out on the water, having a great day fishing, and ensuring that by doing the right thing they are not becoming the ‘catch of the day’.”
Mr Turner urged reef users, particularly those who use the Marine Park irregularly, to consult zoning maps and information prior to heading out on the water.
“There are a range of zoning guides and maps widely available on the GBRMPA website and in bait and tackle stores. We encourage anglers to regularly refresh their zoning knowledge,” he said.
“It is important for people who go out fishing to familiarise themselves with the different rules that apply to fishing in green, yellow and blue zones. “
