Aloomba State School wins Reef award
Tuesday 29 November 2005
Students from Aloomba State School will be presented with an educational pack worth $500 tomorrow (30th November) as the winners of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s (GBRMPA) 30th Anniversary Celebrations Reef Guardian Schools Competition.
To help the GBRMPA celebrate 30 years of managing the Marine Park, Reef Guardian School students were invited to explain what the Great Barrier Reef meant to them and how they do their bit to look after it.
Aloomba State School was chosen as the primary school winner in the Cape York to Mission Beach region and the prize will enable students to set up their very own reef research station.
GBRMPA’s Cairns Regional Liaison Manager, Tony Stokes, said the Aloomba State School entry appealed to him the most as it was bright and colourful and the students had written a catchy rhyme about the Marine Park.
“The students clearly have a great idea about what we need to do to protect the Reef, with their poem stating ‘If you want the Reef to be around, make sure you look after your surrounds. Don’t litter or pollute are the things you should do, to keep the water clear and blue’,” Mr Stokes said.
Aloomba State School’s entry has also been chosen to feature in the GBRMPA’s Christmas card for 2005.
