Reef Guardian School Program
More than 150 schools in the Great Barrier Reef catchment have pledged their support for the Great Barrier Reef through their involvement in the Reef Guardian School Program.
This action-based school participation program relates to current issues affecting the Great Barrier Reef and involves students, teachers and the community in environmental initiatives. Through the program, teachers have access to environmental-themed curriculum material and students are involved in activities both in and outside the classroom to help protect the Reef. This includes schools undertaking energy audits, creating worm farms, composting, growing their own fruit and vegetables, and taking part in local litter clean ups. Schools benefit from their involvement in the Reef Guardian School Program by being recognised as leaders in sustainable living in their local communities.
Whilst the Reef Guardian School Program is only available along the Great Barrier Reef catchment area, resources are available to assist all schools to be environmentally aware.
