| Reef Guardian Farmer and Grazier news |
The Reef Guardian Farmer and Reef Guardian Grazier initiatives are voluntary programs that aim to showcase the positive actions that producers along the Great Barrier Reef coast are undertaking.
These programs will deliver new industry stewardship programs that will improve capacity and facilitate the adoption of environmentally sustainable practices which will ultimately improve the resilience of the Great Barrier Reef.
The Reef Guardian Farmer and Reef Guardian Grazier programs were introduced in a cross-industry stakeholder concept meeting in September
2010, with enthusiastic support expressed from participants representing GrowCom, Canegrowers, Agforce, Regional NRM groups, State and Commonwealth Government, as well as grower/producers. This concept meeting provided guidance on what actions would define a "Reef Guardian Farmer" or "Reef Guardian Grazier" and overall program structure.
The overarching objective of the programs is to positively engage with farmers and graziers in the Great Barrier Reef catchment, through recognition of best practice management actions on-farm that contribute to reef resilience.
