Who we are

What we do

  • Functions and Decision making powers

The GBRMPA is responsible for the Great Barrier Reef's planning and management through the control, care and development of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The GBRMPA does this through the implementation of policy, programs and management strategies and legislative measures by operating within the statutory framework of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975 (GBRMP Act), the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and by complying with other legislation under Australian Government and Queensland Government law, together with relevant international conventions.

In carrying out its functions, the GBRMPA maintains strong partnerships with a wide range of agencies, stakeholders and community members with an interest in the long-term protection, ecologically sustainable use, understanding and enjoyment of the Great Barrier Reef.

The powers of the GBRMPA are conferred by a number of legislative instruments and delegations as outlined below:

  • The Minister may delegate to the Marine Park Authority Board any or all of the Minister’s powers or functions under the GBRMP Act as set out in Section 46(1) of the GBRMP Act.
  • The Marine Park Authority Board may further delegate powers or functions under the GBRMP Act as set out in Section 47 of the GBRMP Act.
  • The Chairperson of the Marine Park Authority Board may delegate powers or functions under the GBRMP Act as set out in Section 48 of the GBRMP Act.

Information about the rules, guidelines, practices and precedents relating to these functions and powers is still being developed.
