Extreme weather on the Great Barrier Reef

Flooding of the Fitzroy, Burnett and Mary Rivers and category five cyclone Yasi both had an impact on the Great Barrier Reef.

The flood waters that hit central Queensland towns contained varying amounts of freshwater, sediments, nutrients and pesticides as well as other potential contaminants.

Additionally, about 13 per cent of the Great Barrier Reef, from Cairns to Townsville, was exposed to Yasi's destructive winds. The affected area represents a 300km stretch of the 2400km-long Reef.
