Cultural Heritage
The relationship of Traditional Owners with the marine environment, and evidence of Aboriginal occupation of these islands, is demonstrated by the existence of physical sites of ongoing special significance to Traditional Owners, such as stone fish-traps, rock art sites, campsites and middens. The Girringun Aboriginal Corporation is a local organisation that represents the native title and cultural heritage rights and interests over land and waters for Dyribal, Waragamay, Nyawaigi, Bandjin, Warungnu and Girramay peoples. The Girringun Aboriginal Corporation has taken an active role in promoting Aboriginal culture within the area and is working in partnership with management agencies to maintain the values of the Hinchinbrook area.
