Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority :: Ports

Ports

Six port authorities administer ports along the Queensland coast adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The ports of Bundaberg, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns are each managed by individual port authorites. On 13 March 2008 the Central Queensland Ports Authority which manages the Port of Gladstone and Port of Rockhampton (Port Alma) changed its name to Gladstone Ports Corporation. The Ports Corporation of Queensland (PCQ) administers the remaining ports.

Ports and Harbours are often confused

A port is a man-made coastal or riverine facility where boats and ships can load and unload. It may consist of wharfs, jetties, piers and slipways and have specially designed equipment to help in the loading and unloading of vessels.

A Harbour is a protected stretch of water where vessels may safely anchor or secure to shore, in a cove, or bay or between islands. Harbours can be man-made or natural. A man-made harbour will have sea walls or breakwaters. A natural harbour is surrounded on most sides by land.
