Hinchinbrook Local Marine Advisory Committee (Hinchinbrook LMAC)
At the centre of the Hinchinbrook region is the World Heritage listed Hinchinbrook Island. Hinchinbrook Island National Park is one of the world’s most outstanding island parks. Its mangrove forests are some of the richest and most varied in Australia and it is an important breeding ground for many marine animals. Hinchinbrook Island attracts many visitors to the area to walk and camp on the island or fish in the surrounding waters.
The region is the southern part of the Wet Tropics. The Herbert River is the biggest river catchment in the region. The fertile lower reaches of the Herbert are lush cattle and agricultural areas. Agricultural land is dominated by sugarcane, however some tropical fruit crops are also grown in the region.
