Cassowary Coast Local Marine Advisory Committee
The region is known for the endangered cassowary, which lives in the remaining coastal rainforest near Mission Beach.
The main industries in the region are agriculture (sugar cane, bananas and tropical fruits) and tourism. There are sugar mills in Tully and South Johnstone. A commercial fishing fleet operates out of Innisfail.
Cassowary Coast LMAC region
The Cassowary Coast LMAC is concerned with the area extending from Flying Fish Point in the north to Dallachy Creek in the south and includes the coastal towns of Innisfail, Mission Beach, Kurrimine Beach and Mourilyan.
Who is represented on the Cassowary Coast LMAC?
Members of the Cassowary Coast LMAC represent a diversity of interest groups including catchment management groups; commercial and recreational fishing interests; primary industries; conservation groups; community groups and local councils. Government officers from the Queensland Department of Environment and Resource Management, Primary Industries and Fisheries and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) also attend the committee meetings.
What are some of the current issues the LMAC is concerned about?
- Coastal development impacts on reef water quality
- Monitoring of seagrasses off Mission Beach
- Fish kills
- Mourilyan Harbour facilities upgrade
- Fishing regulations and impacts of fishing, including Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries spawning closures
- Need for better signage denoting green zones
- Involved in supporting the Reef Guardian Schools program.
What the LMAC has accomplished?
- Sponsorship of a sustainable fishing event at Innisfail
- Installation of buoys to denote the green zone at King Reef, Kurrimine Beach
- Support for barotrauma project
- Ongoing seagrass monitoring following the inshore trawl closure in 2002
- Seagrass monitoring trip with Reef Guardian School students
- Reef forums with specialist speakers in Mission Beach and Innisfail
- LMAC name change from "Mission Beach LMAC" to "Cassowary Coast LMAC" to better denote area of interest.
