Participation in recreational fishing

Fernbach, 2008:

"In several studies that randomly sampled Queensland coastal residents, it is possible to establish the proportion of the population who fished in the past 12 months. Further, we can compare these proportions over time as there have been several studies that used similar methods and asked equivalent questions. The proportion of local residents who fished has decreased, where 15 per cent fished within the past 12 months on the Great Barrier Reef in 2007 (Young & Temperton 2007), down from 20 per cent in 2005 (AEC Group 2005) and 39 per cent in 2001 (Higgs & McInnes 2003). Similar decreases in Queensland as a whole are found in a number of household surveys: 33 per cent of households in 1996 reported that at least one member had been fishing in the past 12 months, decreasing to 30 per cent in 2001 (Higgs & McInnes 2003) and 28 per cent in 2006 (Sutton, 2006)."
