Number of sea snakes caught in trawling
Courtney et al., in press:
"For all sectors pooled, the estimated mean annual number of sea snakes caught by the fishery from 2003-2007 was 105 210 (se 28 542). Of these, about 8939 snakes were dead in nets when brought to the surface and a further 22 935 snakes died in the following hours and days after trawling. The red-spot king prawn sector was responsible for the majority of sea snake bycatch and mortality."
