Status of Humpback Whales in Eastern Australia at the end of the 20th Century - 1994 to 1999 Surveys

Paterson et al (2001) conducted shore-based observations of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) from Point Lookout during 1978-1999.  Devastated by whaling, the stock is estimated to be recovering at a rate of 10.9% per annum (99% CI+/- 1%) and to number 3,600+/- 440 in 1999.
