Recreational fishing estimated GBR area catch

Estimated recreational catch in the GBRMP Area

Data from Queensland Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPI&F) Chris database and 2005 Recfishing Diary Program, showing estimated recreational catch (retained and non-retained, expressed as numbers of individuals) for the five statistical areas adjacent to the GBRMP.

Note: Far Northern Statistical Region extends round into the Gulf of Carpentaria, so is an over-estimate of likely catch; and Wide Bay-Burnett region extends south beyond the boundary of the GBRMP, so it is also an over estimate of catch in GBRMP waters.

Percentage retained catch per region is as follows:
Far Northern 32 per cent
Northern 43 per cent
Mackay 42 per cent
Fitzroy 42 per cent
Wide Bay-Burnett 53 per cent

Non-retention of catch can relate to many factors including:

  • capture of individuals of target species that are under or over-size relative to the bag limits.
  • capture of more than the bag limit per species
  • capture of non-target species
  • practicing tag and release fishing
