Impact of shocks on Australian inbound tourism

Impacts of shocks on tourism visitation

Tourism Research Australia, 2008:

"Over the period from 1977 to 2007, visitor arrivals grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.2% a year to reach 5.6 million. Visitor arrivals declined in six of those past 30 years with four of those negative years occurring in the past nine years. While a range of factors contributed to the negative growth in each of those years, the impact of external shocks was significant. The base forecast is for visitor arrivals to reach 8.7 million in 2017, representing average annual growth of 4.4% over the period from 2007, higher than the average rate of the past 10 years (2.7%).

This scenario is based on the assumption taken from the current results of 'Consensus Forecasts' that the price of West Texas Intermediate oil will fall from current levels to US$110 a barrel in June 2009."
