Limited quantitative data for Indigenous harvest of marine species

Perrin et al., 2002:

"Some Indigenous peoples in Australia are permitted by law to hunt dugongs as a Native Title right. The legal status of hunting by indigenous Australians who are not Native Title holders is less certain. There are no quantitative records for Indigenous  harvest in the region. The total catch is likely to be of the order of several hundred dugongs per year. Dugongs are also killed opportunistically for meat, oil and other products such as tusks and tears in Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Vietnam."
