Beaches and Tidal Flats

Alongi, 1998:

"Sandy beaches and intertidal flats are among the most physically dynamic environments in the sea. The energy expended in the movement of water and sediment is pre-eminent compared to the energy dissipated through food webs. The geomorphology and nature of shorelines vary greatly, regulated by wave and tidal energy, and sediment grain size. Shorelines along many coasts reflect a continuum from high energy, coarse sandy beaches, to low energy , sand or mudflats where physical forces are less dominant and where biological forces come into play."
