Tourism, recreation and community engagement

The GBRMPA has a number of staff dedicated to facilitating engagement with the tourism and recreation stakeholders, and with the broader community.

The GBRMPA has legislative requirements to undertake formal consultation when making amendments to the Zoning Plan and amendments and development of Plans of Management. The GBRMPA also undertakes formal consultation for development of policy and site management arrangements.

Committees

The GBRMPA has established various advisory committees to assist in the management of particular issues in Marine Park locations and operational programmes.

Tourism and Recreation Reef Advisory Committee

The GBRMPA has four competency-based committees called Reef Advisory Committees (RACs) to provide advice to the Authority on each of its critical issues.

The Tourism and Recreation Reef Advisory Committee (TRRAC) provides advice to the GBRMPA and, in particular, the Tourism and Recreation Group, on policy development, research and monitoring. The Committee also advises on the development and implementation of strategic and management plans to ensure the inclusion of the range of stakeholders’ perspectives.

Local Marine Advisory Committees

Voluntary community-based committees called Local Marine Advisory Committees (LMACs) were established in 1999 to enable local communities to have effective input into the management of the Marine Park.

There are 11 LMACs along the coast from Bundaberg to Cape York.

Industry Associations

The GBRMPA also works with a range of industry and industry related associations, including:
