Decline in shark catch in the Queensland shark control program (1962-2001)

Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries, 2001:

"The Queensland Shark Control Program was introduced in 1962 following a number of fatal shark attacks.  Shark gear is now in place on 84 Queensland beaches and involves the use of either drum lines or a combination of both nets and drum lines" .

Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries (QPIF) report that nearly 70 per cent of sharks taken in Queensland waters are tiger or whaler sharks which have been repeatedly linked to fatal attacks.

Figure 3 suggests that the shark population has decreased in the past 25 years, a result which is not unexpected (QPIF 2001).
