Inshore net fishery bycatch

QDPI&F online:

"Information on the proportions of target catch and bycatch were collected for seven inshore net fisheries operating in Queensland waters. Though the proportion of the total catch (in numbers of fish) represented by the target species varied widely between fisheries (see table below). When the overall marketed components of the catches were considered, the proportions of the total catches discarded as bycatch were generally low (see table). This was because catches of some of these fisheries were of a "mixed species" nature. For example, though commonly referred to as a barramundi fishery, net fishing practices conducted under the N2 and N3 symbols will often catch reasonable numbers of other valuable market species including threadfin salmon, grunter and shark."
