Outlook Online 2009

Economic value of recreational activities

Total contribution of GBR recreational use in 2006/07 was $97million to the GBRCA, $106million to Queensland, and $153million to Australia.  This represents a relative annual growth rate of 8% for the GBRCA, 4% for Queensland and 7% for Australia. Direct contributions are mainly wholesale trade (23%) and Retail trade (14%), while the largest indirect contribution is from property and business services (28%).

Access Economics estimates that total expenditure on recreational fishing by GBRCA residents in 2006-07 was around $293 million.

Adjusting for the 39.5% of fishing trips for those GBRCA residents classified as tourists (DPI&F survey data), expenditure on recreational fishing was approximately $177 million.

There are no firm data for expenditure on other recreational activities within the GBRMP. Estimates for boats were based on DPI&F data on power boat expenditures that were not attributed to fishing, plus an estimate for sail boats and jet skis. In addition, Access Economics devised estimates for other items such as fuel, food, drink, clothing, diving gear and tours. Estimated expenditure in 2006-07 on recreational activities other than fishing was $105 million.
Economic value of recreational use

Of the reef-dependent industries, Tourism provides the largest economic contribution to the Great Barrier Reef Catchment Area, to Queensland and to Australia. This pattern is consistent over time.
