Recreational fishing effort proxy on GBR Coast

SFG 039a Rec fishing proxy effort map redrawn_800_map.jpg

Map shows likely distribution of recreational fishing effort in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park World Heritage Area. Estimates were derived from:

  • Queensland transport data on recreational vessel registrations in the Great Barrier Reef Catchment. (http://www.gbrmpa.gov.au/corp_site/key_issues/tourism/management/gbr_visitation/rec_vessels/). Major coastal centres have the largest numbers of recreational vessel registrations. Most (77 per cent) vessels are between 3-5 m long or (19 per cent) 5-8 m. Only 1 per cent are more than 8m in length.
  • Knowledge that most recreational fishers (77 per cent) do half day to one-day trips (Office of Economic and Statistical Research, 2008).
  • Information suggesting that the majority (77 per cent) of recreational fishers launch their boats at boat ramps within a 10km radius of their homes (Blamey and Hundle 1995).
