Boat strikes and dugongs

Greenland and Limpus., 2007:

"There were 47 records of stranded or dead dugong from throughout Queensland in the year 2007.

Two confirmed reports were made of dugongs dying from boat strike (Table 2). Both cases occurred in the Moreton Bay Marine Park area.

Comparable levels of dugong mortality from boat strike have occurred over the past seven years (Table 3).

Case histories in 2007:

  • K35226: 16 February 2007; Near Macleay Island, Moreton Bay; adult male; hit by water taxi and beach washed dead two days later with boat strike injuries.
  • W1889: 19 March 2007; Karagarra Island, Moreton Bay; unsexed adult; beach washed dead with propeller cuts to dorsal surface of the body."
