Commercial Fishing Line (combined) catch trends

line

Annual commercial line (combined reef line and line component of the inshore finfish fisheries) catch (in tonnes) in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park World Heritage Area from 2004 - 2007. The number of active boats per year is shown above in each bar.

  • A number of factors are contributing to the catch and effort pattern shown: economic drivers (e.g. high fuel prices, diminished labour market as well as strong export market demand for species for the live reef fish trade) have resulted in industry consolidation and increased efficiency.
  • At the same time, quota management was introduced into the reef line fishery in July 2004, fundamentally changing the dynamics.
  • Some of the pattern will reflect industry adjustment (including licence buyouts, business restructuring and changing fishing locations) following the introduction of the new Zoning Plan in July 2004.
