Commercial Fishing Otter Trawl catch trends

 trawl

Annual otter trawl catch (in tonnes) in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park World Heritage Area from 2004 - 2007. The number of active boats per year is shown above each bar. The number of active boats in this fishery has been steadily decreasing for many years (prior to 2004- refer to DPI&F Annual Status Report for trawl for details). In recent years this has been primarily due to changing economic circumstances eg. high cost of fuel, diminished labour market, competition from cheap aquacultured imports and poor exchange rates for export product. Some of the pattern is likely to reflect seasonality across different sectors of the trawl fishery and industry adjustment (including licence buyouts, business restructuring and changing fishing locations) following the introduction of the new Zoning Plan in July 2004.
