Contribution of EMC to Marine Park Management
The Environmental Management Charge (EMC) was introduced in 1993 primarily to recoup a percentage of the cost of managing the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
In 2007 the EMC contributed in excess of $7 million to the GBRMPA budget for use in management, research and education. This represents 18.49 per cent of the GBRMPA annual budget for 2007.
The EMC was introduced on 1 July 1993 at the rate of $1.00 per person per day and increased to $2.00 per person per day in 1997, and increased to $4.00 per person per day in 1998.
The EMC is linked with the Consumer Price Index (all groups) for Brisbane. Increases take place on 1 April during years when the accumulated indexed calculation reaches $1.40 or more.
- On 1 April 2004, the standard tourism program charge increased from $4.00 per person per day to $4.50 per person per day.
- On 1 April 2007, the standard tourism program charge increased from $4.50 per person per day to $5.00 per person per day.
