Fishing Catch from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park

Information in this chart provides an overview of the current knowledge regarding catch (both retained and non-retained) per sector in the GBRMP.

Commercial retained catch information was extracted from CFish and DPI&F 2007 annual status reports; multipliers to estimate proportion of non-retained commercial catch were supplied by DPI&F. Charter (2007) and recreational (2005) catch (retained and non-retained) was extracted directly from the CFish and CHRIS databases. Indigenous information was obtained from the DPI&F Annual Status reports and the Henry and Lyle (2003) National Recreational and Indigenous fishing survey.

Non-retained catch may result from several factors: compliance with regulatory measures (e.g. species-specific size and bag limits),fisher preference - return of unfavoured species, Catch and release approaches to recreational and charter fishing, unintended capture of unwanted species (bycatch).
