Impacts of boat strike on cetaceans

Greenland and Limpus., 2002:

"Eighty six sick, injured or dead cetaceans and two pinnipeds were reported from the Queensland coast in 2007. Human activities were implicated in the death or injury of 42 cetaceans (48 per cent of all cetacean reports) (Table 2).

Case histories attributed to boat strikes in 2007:

Megaptera novaeangliae (Humpback whale):

  • W1941: 29 August 2007; Fitzalan Passage,Whitsundays. Whale was stuck by a 30m vessel. The whale swam away and “appeared to be uninjured”.
  • W1985 & W1986: 17 September 2007; Dunk Island, north Queensland; mother and calf both had propeller injuries on their back. Both the whales’  injuries were considered to be not life threatening by EPA staff.
  • A humpback whale (W1939) was found floating dead off Clump Point, Mission Beach with bruising associated with a non-penetrating injury to the head. There is insufficient information from the partial necropsy to positively determine the cause of death, but is could have possibly been caused by boat strike."
