Reducing climate footprints
Climate change is the greatest long term threat to the Great Barrier Reef, and effective global action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is critical to the future of coral reefs around the world.
The GBRMPA is making important contributions to regional efforts to reduce climate footprints by:
- Raising awareness of climate change and its impact on the Reef
- Encouraging individuals and communities to take ownership of the Reef, motivating them to take action to protect it
- Providing information, ideas and support for activities that reduce energy consumption and climate footprints
- Building tools and resources to help reef-related industries and communities take action to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
The GBRMPA has also supported important reef education facilities to undertake extensive reviews of their energy consumption, leading to large decreases in their climate footprints:
- Lady Elliott Island: achieved 100 per cent carbon neutrality by upgrading their facilities and replacing diesel-run generators with solar powered energy sources.
- Low Isles: Working towards carbon neutrality by adopting solar energy and upgrading their sewage treatment facilities
- Reef HQ Aquarium: achieved a large reduction in energy use by upgrading pump and filter systems and altering its light fixtures for more energy efficient bulbs.
These three groups are being showcased to encourage the adoption of similar practices in other businesses and infrastructure projects in the Great Barrier Reef region.
The GBRMPA has also collaborated with industry groups to develop a range of environmental accreditation schemes and programs that encourage and reward reef businesses for reducing their climate footprints
