Eye on the Reef monitoring
The Eye on the Reef Monitoring Program is a successful partnership between the tourism industry, researchers and marine park managers.
Tourism staff regularly collect standardised biological information at frequently visited sites throughout the Great Barrier Reef Region. The findings are analysed and reported back to industry staff, Reef managers and the reef research community.
The Eye on the Reef Program involves:
- Facilitating information exchange between the program partners
- Providing cost effective methods of obtaining ‘trend and trigger’ information about reef sites in the Great Barrier Reef
- Fostering stewardship and appreciation of the Reef by tourism industry staff and the reef tourists that visit the Great Barrier Reef.
Strong partnerships have been forged with Eye on the Reef monitoring crew, and tourism operators regularly send emails, photographs and videos alerting the GBRMPA to events and experiences that tourism staff consider to be significant, interesting or awe-inspiring. Their rapid response in reporting on extreme weather events is invaluable.
