Do you own a smartphone? Check. Are you in Townsville? Check. If this sounds like you, come along to Reef Citizen Science Day outside Reef HQ Aquarium this Sunday 16 August and join in free Eye on the Reef monitoring activities as part of National Science Week.
Bring your smartphone along, connect to free Wi-Fi and download the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s (GBRMPA) free Eye on the Reef app.
Inside the aquarium, you can go on a critter safari tour and practice identifying and recording marine creatures for next time you’re out on the Great Barrier Reef.
The day will also include free reef education displays and activities, a free basic marine biology workshop and a night-time Corals and Cocktails event, which includes a talk by GBRMPA marine biologist Fiona Merida.
GBRMPA’s Eye on the Reef program enables anyone out on the water to collect valuable information about Reef health, animals and incidents. The long-term data gathered through the Eye on the Reef program is vital for understanding Reef health and identifying management actions necessary to protect the Reef ecosystem.
